April is National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. In honor of the celebration, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is asking that everyone try to wear the color orange—the ASPCA’s color—or to use the color orange in some big, major way to raise awareness.
The ASPCA suggests throwing a party, getting a business to “go orange,” or doing several other activities. They are also hosting a photo contest where people can submit photos of their events to win an ASPCA prize pack, as well as be featured on the site.
Here are some ideas you might want to use in raising awareness and entering the contest. Good luck, and remember to submit your photos by April 30.
Incorporate orange into your outfit every day this week—from scrunchies to ties to socks. Invite people to ask you why you’re wearing orange and tell them about the campaign.
As the ASPCA suggests, use your Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or other social networking page to raise awareness.
Paint something an outrageous orange color. Fingernails and toenails are an easy way to do this. If you’re feeling brave (or really just like the color orange), paint your car, house, bike, or anything else you use on a regular basis.
For a non-permanent effect, hang orange crepe paper or poster board around your house or covering the windows.
Offer to do some free orange face-painting for a cause, at work, or in the park. Accept donations and give them to the ASPCA or your local animal shelter.
Tye-die orange t-shirts with school children, relatives, an elderly center, or a homeless shelter. Give out the shirts for free and explain why you made them.
Dye your hair orange for the day with washout dye. If you want to get creative, use an orange Mohawk, orange tips, or just an orange streak.
Accessorize with orange, from lipstick to eye shadow, bracelets to belts.
Give everyone a free orange (fruit) at lunchtime. Explain why when they ask. Give them out at rallies, sporting events, or anywhere you go—everyone will get a nutritious snack as well as a reminder about protecting the animals.
Buy your pet an orange collar to wear. Wear orange glitter to match him.
Host a Puppy Prom and invite people to dress up in orange and bring their dogs and cats. Serve orange foods—from sherbet punch to ambrosia—and don’t forget to buy some orange treats for the pets. Invite everyone to donate to raise money for the ASPCA or any other animal charity of your choice.
