Today, August 15, is Best Friends’ Day. If you’re lucky enough to have a best friend whom you love—who loves and supports you back—today is indeed a day to celebrate. Whether it’s someone you’ve shared lunches with since kindergarten, your spouse, or a sister or brother, be sure to celebrate your special friendship today. You could always…
- Give your friend a token of appreciation. Write a heartfelt card or poem, give a small gift, or offer to do your friend a favor—particularly something she or he doesn’t like to do, like mow the lawn or mop.
- Call your friend. This is especially important if you live far away. One of my best friends lives several states away. When she visits, it always feels like absolutely no time has passed—but when she leaves, it is nearly heartbreaking. If you have a far-away friend, be sure to give him or her a call today just to chat.
- Go out in matching outfits. How funny will this be? You might even end up on the People of Wal-Mart website. Bonus if you are opposite sexes.
- Play a prank together. This is my favorite thing to do with one of my best friends from college. We’ve had some great times pranking everyone from my roommate to the pizza delivery guy. Once we even pranked all of the people (whom we didn’t know) entering my dorm one night…
- Embarrass your friend. What better way to show appreciation than some good old-fashioned blush-worthy antics? I don’t mean to pull down your friend’s short so he can moon everyone, but how about serenading him or her at his or her apartment complex? Send an obnoxiously large bouquet of flowers to your friend’s work with a note proclaiming him or her to be the best lover ever. Write something obnoxious—his or her pet name from parents, for example—in shoe polish on your friend’s car.
- Make a home-cooked meal. If your friend is the shyer type who would not appreciate being embarrassed, go for something more heartfelt and make something delicious for dinner instead. If there’s anything I’ve learned growing up—and watching the Food Network lately—it’s that you can often convey your love through food.
- Give the gift of time. Make a date to spend some time with your friend. If he or she could use a break, offer to child-watch (or pet-sit) while he or she has an evening off.
